What is the Effect of Denture Cleaners on Various Stains?

Researched by Kari B.
2000-01

PURPOSE

The purpose of this experiment was to determine which denture cleanser would remove coffee, grape juice and cola stains from denture material the best.

I became interested in this idea while watching a television advertisement commercial for Efferdent Plus Denture Cleaner; I wondered which brand was truly the best.

The information gained from this experiment will help denture wearers reduce the discoloration of their dentures.  This would save the consumers money.

HYPOTHESIS

My hypothesis was that Efferdent Plus denture cleaner would remove coffee, grape juice, and cola better than Polident.

I base my hypothesis on Terri Jonas who said, "Efferdent Plus remove coffee stains from my teeth the best." Terri has worn dentures for 10 years, and consumes 4 cups of coffee on a daily basis.  Terri had experience using both cleaners.

EXPERIMENT DESIGN

The constants in this study were:
Type of dentures
Amount of time dentures soaked in stain
Amount of time dentures soaked in remover
Size and type of containers dentures are soaked in
 Amount of stain (50 ml)

The manipulated variable was the denture cleaner used

The responding variable was the whiteness of the stained denture after being exposed to the cleaners.

To measure the responding variable I will measure the whiteness of each denture using a dental shade guide provided by Chalet Dental Clinic.

  •  Carefully pour 50mL of grape juice in cups E2, P2, and h20/gr.
  •  Carefully pour 50mL of Coca-Cola in cups E3, P3, and h20/cc.
  •  Match the tooth color with the closest shade on the shade guide and record.
  •  Carefully place 1 tooth each cup.
  •  Set an alarm clock for 24 hours.  When it goes off, reset it for another 24 hours.
  •  Carefully pour 50mL of water (45ºC) into cups labeled E4 and P4 with h20/CF, h20/GR & h20/CC.
  •  Carefully remove stained tooth from each cup with tweezers.
  •  Carefully place each stained tooth onto sheet of plastic wrap.
  •  Match up each stained tooth with shade on the shade guide as close as possible.
  •  Carefully place the coffee stained teeth into each of the Plasdent denture baths.  One in each.
  •  Carefully pour contents of cleaner package, and follow the directions on the package.
  •  Set timer for 15 minutes.
  •  When timer goes off, remove tooth from container.
  •  Match up each stained tooth with shade on the shade guide as close as possible, and record.
  •  Repeat steps 16-21 but use the grape juice, and Coca-Cola stained teeth.
  •  Record and organize all data.
  •  Repeat steps 2-23 for one more trial.

RESULTS

The original purpose of this experiment was to determine which denture cleanser would remove coffee, grape juice and cola stains from denture material the best

The results of the experiment were that the teeth that were cleaned in Efferdent Plus decreased a greater number of shades on the shade guide.  Teeth that were cleaned in the control group decreased the least number of shades on the shade guide.  In other words, Efferdent Plus was the best whitener.

See the table and graphs.

CONCLUSION

My hypothesis was that Efferdent Plus denture cleaner would remove various stains most effectively from denture materials.

The results indicate that this hypothesis should be accepted because the denture materials in which were cleaned in Efferdent were whiten most thoroughly.

Because of the results of this experiment, I wonder if different amounts of ingredients in the cleanser would affect the whiteness of the denture material.  I also wonder if the temperature of the stains and cleansers would affect the amount of whiteness.

If I were to conduct this project again I would use a larger variety of stains, and a larger variety of denture cleansers.  I would control the temperature of the stains and cleansers.  I would do more than 2 trials.  I also would stain the teeth for a longer period of time like 72 or 96 hours, instead of 48 hours, and clean the teeth for 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes.

RESEARCH REPORT

INTRODUCTION

The study of denture materials and cleaners can be helpful for denture wearers trying to choose a cleaner that will remove stains from their dentures effectively. The following information might help people understand where dentures came from, how to clean them, what stains them and the types of dentures.

WHAT ARE DENTURES

Dentures are artificial replacements for missing natural teeth and supporting tissue.  They are a vital replacement that helps speaking and chewing; it also helps keep firmness in gums.  They are a vital restoration for facial appearance, ability to speak clearly and chew food, and maintaining the jaw shape.  The construction of dentures is known as prosthodontics. Dentures help people in many ways.  Such ways are treating things such as cancer reconstruction, congenital missing teeth, TMD, jaw joints problem, traumatic injuries, snoring and other sleeping disorders.

HISTORY OF DENTURES
The Etruscans made the earliest known dentures.  They were crafted of stone, wood and animal teeth until the nineteenth century.  The nineteenth century was when dentures were embedded in gutta-percha or rubber bases.  Since World War II porcelain or plastic dentures have been embedded in plastic for lighter, less bulky, better fitting dentures.

PROTECTING YOUR TEETH

Eating, chewing, and nightly "grinding" can affect your teeth.  Wear on teeth with large fillings can lead to portions off teeth breaking off.  To maintain healthy teeth, people are advised to brush and floss daily, and avoid unhealthy food such as candy, and other sugary foods.  To preserve the remains, prosthodontists suggest a crown or a cap.

REPLACING LOST TEETH

Teeth can be lost for a number of reasons.  Some such ways are decay, gum disease, injury, wear, medical or congenital problems.  Some of the treatments include single or multiple replacements, crowns or bridge, partial or complete dentures.

IMPROVING YOUR SMILE

There are many ways to improve your smile.  Some ways are placing complete ceramic aesthetic crowns or "caps" onto teeth, placing veneers, which is a thin porcelain shell, onto teeth to conceal defects.  Using a bonding technology on a tooth’s surface to change shape or close gaps can also help.  Another way is bleaching discolored teeth to brighten and whiten.

TYPES OF DENTURES

There are two basic types of dentures.  Full dentures and partial dentures.  A full denture set is used when all teeth in the jaw are missing.  A partial denture set is used when some natural teeth are present.  Both types consist of porcelain or acrylic that is embedded to a base, also made of acrylic.

DENTURE CLEANERS

There are two different methods for cleaning dentures.  They are brushing the dentures with a paste-like material, and soaking dentures in a cleansing solution.

There are special brushes called Dentabrush, which denture wearers are specifically recommended to use if they are going to brush their dentures.  Dentabrushes are a two-sided toothbrush.  On one side, there is a regular toothbrush bristle surface; the other side is a triangular shaped bristle surface.  It is wider than a normal toothbrush.  For this method, you would brush your teeth regularly, but using a Dentabrush and a special paste.

When using a cleansing solution you usual would soak the denture material in a Plasdent Denture Bath with the solution.  Solutions are meant to cleanse and whiten the denture material.  Most cleanser have a mint flavoring, to freshen the teeth.  While soaking the dentures, consumers are advised not to soak in hot water, because the denture material may erode away.

SUMMARY

Dentures are artificial replacements for missing teeth.  Dentures have been worn since the nineteenth century. Eating, chewing and nightly grinding can wear down your teeth. Many people wear dentures today.  There are many things that effect the whiteness of denture material.  There are various ways to clean them and also different products to clean them with. There are two types of dentures, acrylic and porcelain.  There are two ways to clean dentures, scrubbing them with a toothbrush and a special paste, or by soaking them in a cleansing solution.
