Introduction
I have worked with
special education students myself and I adored all of them. In fact,
some special education students are extremely intelligent. Some of
these students need more help than others, but they are still a living
human being who deserves just as much respect as you and me. Special
needs children are normal people, they may need a little extra
attention, but that does not change who they are on the inside.
How Some People Treat Specially Educated Children
Children
often tease special needs children because of the way that they look or
how they act. This is wrong. Everyone has the right to be treated with
respect, whether they need extra help or not. Special children are
discriminated against because of their looks and actions. People cannot
change the way they look, and some people cannot control how they act,
either. As the years go by students have been increasing to develop
better attitude toward these children. Although some people still don’t
have the class to step up and treat people how they deserve to be
treated. Disabled people are just as capable of having successful
lives, they just need a little extra help and time.
Causes and Cures
Some
people are born with disabilities and deformities, while others have
terrible incidents that occur in their life. For example, people can
end up in a wheel chair permanently because of car accidents, they can
get paralyzed, or receive brain damage. Being disabled does not mean
that you are not normal. It just means that you need a little more help
than other people. Some disabilities can be cured from surgery, but
some are incurable. Cranio-sacral therapy may not cure a person’s
disability, but it will not make it worse. Where a surgery could make a
disability worse therapy will help a person. This may help relax their
brain and calm them down so that they can concentrate on something
important.
Specially Educated Children and Their Education
All
schools have some sort of special education program. Due to the degree
of disability, children can stay a few hours or the entire in the
special education classroom. A very intelligent person could be
disabled, not all disabled people are smart, but some can be very
smart. Schools are in need of more special education teachers. About
eight percent of all special education teachers are not certified for
their job. Special Education teachers may negatively affect disabled
people from birth to twenty-one years of age. Antonis Katsiyannis is a
professor for special education at Clemson University. IDEA
(Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) says that the following
things are needed at every school, “Include disabled children, expand
special education classrooms, foster research validates instructional
and behavioral interventions, support profession, and development
involved with special education and related subjects.” The best way to
help disabled children is to not educate them until age six or seven.
There are not any schools built for just disabled children, but there
are a few classrooms in all schools for these children.
Conclusion
If
you have friends that are rude and hateful toward needing children you
should let them know that being in that type of situation is out of
there control. They obviously don’t know what it feels like to be made
fun of, and I am sure that if they were the one being picked on in the
situation; they wouldn’t think that it was very fun either.
Volunteering at Kathy’s classroom made me realize that disabled
children are no different then you and me. They are still human and
they do everything that the average human does. I got to play a board
game with one of her students, this was because she was behaving well
and then received a reward. I often picture myself in that their
situation and your realize that real life is different that what you
read or watch on television. I hope that you take this to mind and put
yourself in the shoes of a disabled person. Your life would then seem
like a piece of cake, so please treat disabled people with just as much
respect as you would treat your family and friends with. In my report
you learned about many things about disabled children. Now you know
that these children are no different from you and me, they just need a
little extra attention.
My Volunteer Experience
I
helped out in Mrs. Woolmans special education (Special Ed) classroom
for two days a week. I helped her file papers, clean; sharpen pencils,
made example pages, ran errands to students and teachers, and many
other things. Kathy (Mrs. Woolman) was my Kindergarten teacher. This
was my second year volunteering at Kathy’s classroom. Ever since Fifth
Grade I have been helping out at Robert Lince Elementary after school.
I met some awesome kids. In fact, I am still volunteering there. One of
the little girls in her classroom made a picture for me. I have had a
lot of fun helping out so far and I encourage everyone to try it. |
