Introduction

Pyramids are fascinating structures built by Egyptians.  The Egyptians build it for the pharaoh in his afterlife.  Some of the great pyramids of Egypt are some of the largest structures in the world!

Blocks of a Pyramid

A pyramid is built in horizontal layers of blocks. A type of block called Grantie is used for details on the pyramid.  The blocks were positioned to go up ramps to the pyramid.  People say that the great pyramid of Knufu has 2.3 million stone blocks, but others question that figure.   There are 2 million blocks on a pyramid!

Places of Pyramids

There are all kinds of places with pyramids. Some places are Egypt, China, Rome, and India.  Other places are France and Greece.  In 2004 there was even clear images of pyramids on mars!

Well Known Pyramids

There are many fascinating and well known pyramids in Egypt.  The great pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid in Egypt and one of the largest in the world!  The first large Egyptian pyramid was the step pyramid Saqqara built during the first dynasty of the Old Kingdom,to protect the body of King Djoser who died around  2,649 B.C.E. ( Before the common era.)  The bent pyramid as Dashur was so called because the angles of it's sides changes half way up. Pharaoh Djoser’s pyramid was the largest pyramid of it’s time.  Pharaoh Sneferu began 7 level stepped pyramids, some 35 miles south of saqqara and by the time his workers reached the fourth and fifth level of the pyramid he decided to do 8 steps instead of 7 steps.

Pharaohs

Each pharaoh starts his pyramid long before he expects to die.  The pharaoh himself finds sight and positions the pyramid because being the son a god he was all knowing.  Some later kings had step pyramids just like king Djoser but during the reign of king Sneferu the true pyramid, with sloping sides, developed.  Pharaoh Snefru was a builder of several pyramids.  The pharaoh has a writer called a scribe who records what people are doing for the pyramid.  The scribes make lists of the amount of stone needed and the size of the blocks.  Pyramids contained inscriptions of spells to help the pharaoh in his after life.  Also, when the pharaoh dies his pyramid is happily finished.

Building a Pyramid

At the beginning of the fourth dynasty the first true pyramids were built.  When the site is leveled, the work began on the pyramid itself.  When the place has been chosen and the rock is cleared of sand, the base of the pyramid is marked out.  The base of the pyramid is marked out with stakes and measuring cords of palm fibre.  The tools they use for the pyramid are wooden mallets, stone headed hammers, and chisels made by copper.  The sides of the great pyramid are 250 yards long.  It takes 4,000 people to work on a pyramid and 20 years to build it.

The Pyramid it's Self

The pyramid is the symbol of hope.  140 pyramids rise from the desert of Egypt.  Unfortunately, pyramids became targets for tomb robbers.  The pyramids were made to protect the pharaoh's body forever.

Pyramid Builders

Pyramid builders are not slaves.  Some of the pyramid builders were permanent builders, others were not.  One of their biggest projects is the pharaoh's pyramid wich takes years to build.

History

If you were alive in Egypt 4,500 years ago you would be a tomb builder. Egyptian pyramids are the most famous pyramids.  The first pyramid was built as burial place of King Djoser, 2,630 B.C by the gifted architect Imhotep.  The word pyramid comes from the Greek word pyramis.

Research Conclusion

As you can see there are many interesting facts about the great pyramids.  I have learned a ton of things I had no clue about before and I hope you did too.  I hope you enjoyed this presentation.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned

I interviewed Montgomery Walker.  I interviewed him Saturday, February 2nd, of 2008.  I interviewed him at the Selah library.  I chose him because he works at YVCC (Yakima Valley Community College) and he was teaching a class on history. Part of the history class was about Egypt and I also interviewed him because Rachel Mears had interviewed him about pyramids before.  He taught me more things that were very interesting and helpful to my independent project such as that there were not slaves just hired people.

The Products I Created

The product I created was a buzzer board.  On the right side is the questions and on the left side was the answers and there is a hole next to each one.  It needs tin foil to work.  It works by in the back you use tin foil to connect the questions to the answers and when you touch one wire from the buzzer on a question and one on a answer it will buzz if it is correct.
