Project Report

Introduction

I chose this topic because it is very interesting and my grandpa was in the Navy.  Did you know the Navy has been around for 200 years, and that it is divided in to three sections?  Luckily, the purpose of the Navy is to help protect the freedom of the seas.  Also, since the Navy is continuing to grow, its technology will improve over time.

The History of the U.S. Navy

In 1775, the Continental Navy was established.  In 1779, the ship Bonhomme Richard defeated the British frigate Serapis.  Also in 1798, the U.S. Navy was formally established a law providing ship construction.  In 1798, Congress created the department of the Navy.

In 1898, the U.S. fleet crushed the Spanish fleet in the Spanish-American war.  In the same year the first naval plane was also purchased.  Only 43 years later on December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.  The U.S. declared war on Japan the following day.  In 1947 the Department of Defense was formally established.  In 1954, the U.S.S. Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered sub was commissioned.   In 1955, operation “deep freeze” to Antarctica began.  Did you know that there were actually 3 operation “deep freezes”.  An operation “deep freeze” is when the United States Navy delivers supplies to the Antarctic bases.  In 1976, the Naval academy’s open to women.  Women began serving in 1908 as nurses.  In 1942, the women’s reserve was established.  The women were called W.A.V.E.S., Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.

The Purpose of the Navy

The purpose of the Navy is to protect the freedom of the seas and National security.  During a war the U.S. Navy ships destroy enemy vessels and prevent attacks by sea.  The Navy is divided into three parts, the Department of the Navy, Operating forces, and Shore establishment.

The Department of the Navy is the most important in all 3 sections.  It includes the office of the secretary of the Navy. The Operating forces include the pacific fleet, which operates in the Pacific and Indian Ocean.  The Atlantic fleet operates in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The Shore establishment is made up of many organizations.  That supports the operating forces.

Conclusion

The U.S. Navy has been around for over 200 years and will
Probably stay around for a long time.  The Navy is going to protect the freedom of the seas forever, you can count on that.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned

I interviewed my grandpa Jack Duane Clements.  He gave me a lot of info on his role in the Navy.  He was in the Navy for four years and two months.  The reason he joined the Navy is because he said it looked cool and he didn’t have any thing else to do.  He went to boot camp in San Diego, California for six months.  He said his favorite part of the Navy was seeing other Countries.  He said his ship didn’t get shot at during the time he was on, but it did get shot 13 times before and after he served.    His ship did not shoot down any other ships.  His favorite mission was going to Japan.  He was 20 years old when he joined.  He didn’t see or fight any pirates.  He didn’t get to shoot off a rocket or missile.  The different uniforms he had to wear were whites and blues.  Whites were for hot weather and blues for mild weather.      My Grandpa told me a story about the time he went to Pego Pego Island to refuel. When they tied up to the dock he saw natives with bushy hair and just a towel wrapped around them. They carried machetes. No one ever got off the ship!  He also went to Pearl Harbor, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, and Hawaii.     His job on the ship was a 3rd class Boiler man.  A sub was practicing and accidentally shot off a dummy torpedo that was headed strait for the side off the ship, but luckily the Captain turned the ship and it went right passed.  They were patrolling the shores of Korea when a 5-inch cannon fired off of shore and blew a hole in the deck of the ship.

My Grandpa was on the U.S.S.Ozbourn (DD846). The Ozbourn was a gearing class Destroyer during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  The Ozbourn was laid down by Bath iron works June 16, 1945, and launched December 22,1945.  Commanded by Commander Bernard a smith.  When hostages started to be held in Korea, the Ozbourn joined task force 77 (T.F.77).  In february1951, despite having 2 direct hits, rescued a crashed pilot floating in a minefield.  The Ozbourn was in the 7th Fleet.  It provided gunfire in the 3rd and 4th corps areas of South Vietnam delivering gunfire in high explosives.  She received direct hits March 15; and December 4th 1967 but continued her mission each time.  She was struck from the Naval Vessel register on June 1, 1967 and scrapped.  As of 2006, no other ship has been named Ozbourn.

 Products

The products I created are a diorama of the Navy at work and a model of the U.S.S. Ozbourn.  The Diorama is a simple box filled with clay land and boats.  I used little green army men firing at the boats.  The model of the U.S.S. Ozbourn is simply made out of two pieces of paper taped at the ends then you apply pressure to the ends they will expand outward to the shape of a round rhombus.  Then you simply measure the width cut two pieces of paper the right size and shape and tape them to the top and bottom.
