Introduction

Ken Griffey Jr. is an awesome baseball player!  He played for the Mariners for ten years and is now playing for the Cincinnati Reds.  Ken got his start in the minor leagues in Bellingham, Washington.  I became interested in him for my report when I decided I wanted to do it on a very good baseball player.  Ken is still an active major league baseball player at the age of thirty-eight.

Personal Facts

Ken Griffey Jr. has some interesting personal facts!  Ken’s real name is George Kenneth Griffey Jr.  Ken was born on November 21, 1969.  He was born in Donora, Pennsylvania.  His brother’s name is Craig Griffey.  His mom and dad’s names are Alberta and George Griffey and he also has a sister named Lathesia.

Football

Ken Griffey Jr. didn’t just play baseball in high school.  He also played football.  Ken’s football career ended when he graduated from high school.  He quit football in his senior year.  Ken was a tailback and split end when he played football.  Ken’s dad Griffey Sr. thought that Ken might have a career in football.  Ken played for the Cincinnati Moller High Gridders.

Suicide Attempt

Just because Ken Griffey Jr. was a really good baseball player didn’t mean that he didn’t have some problems in his life.  When Ken attempted suicide in January 2008, he swallowed over two hundred aspirin pills.  Kens stomach got pumped when he was in the hospital.  Ken attempted suicide because he was depressed and angry.  He did not want to live.  When his dad came to see, him they started arguing.  Ken got mad at him and ripped the I.V. cord out of his arm which finished the argument.  After the argument Ken Jr. and his dad started corresponding and understanding each other more.

Minor League Baseball

Before Ken was a major league baseball player, he played minor league baseball.  The first team Ken was with was a class ‘A’ team that played at Bellingham, Washington.  Ken was named Northwest player of the week once.  After this, he was drafted by the Mariners.  Fifteen days after he was drafted, Ken hit his first homerun for that team.  Ken was drafted in 1987.

Seattle Mariners

Ken played center field for the Mariners.  Ken was the number one pick in the 1987 draft.  He signed with the Mariners club for a $160,000 bonus. Ken Griffey Jr. first started actually playing on the Seattle Mariners in 1988.  Ken played for the Mariners ten years.

Major League Baseball

Ken Griffey Jr. is an awesome major league baseball player.  Ken plays with the Reds now and has played with the Reds for seven years.  He was traded from the Mariners to the Reds in 2000.  Griffey Jr. plays center field.  Ken has played major league baseball for nineteen years.

Conclusion

Ken Griffey is an all around outstanding athlete.  He played football and plays baseball, two super fun sports in my opinion!  He did attempt suicide but no one is perfect.  Ken played for two major league teams, the Seattle Mariners and now plays for the Cincinnati Reds. I wish I could have some of Ken’s awesome baseball talents!

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned

I interveiwed my grandpa Scott Pope on January 20, 2008.  I interviewed him in Enumclaw, Washington.  I chose him because I am related to him and I felt comfortable with him.  He had also seen Ken Griffey Jr. play on the Mariners.  He told me about Ken Griffey Jr.  Ken played for the Seattle Mariners.  He grew up around baseball.  Ken came to the mariners when he was nine-teen years old.  He was a really good center fielder.  Ken was drafted as a rookie.

The Products I Created

The product I made was a miniature version of a baseball field with Ken Griffey Jr. hitting a homerun.  I used a card board box, two baseball cards, lots of colored printed pictures of a baseball field with stands, scissors, glue, yellow wavy paper, a red colored pencil, white paper, a string, and one colored printed picture of Safeco field, thick green paper, thick red paper, thick blue paper, and a pen.
