Project Report
Introduction
Some
people say that they want to lose weight but you do not want to lose
all your fat because fat keeps your body running properly. If you are
overweight, you may need to become more active. Being over weight is
bad for you. It is bad because being over weight gives you a chance to
die of a disease that is caused by fat. Also eat better foods like
fruit, vegetables and lower how much dairy products you eat (but don’t stop eating them) because they carry a lot of bad fats.
Fat
Fat
plays an important role in the human body. It carries important
vitamins to different organs throughout the human body. Fat is
stored in the liver and under the skin. It also protects the cell
membranes in the cells and keeps the body warm. Fat also builds
things in the body like tissues, hormones and the brain. If a
human eats fat then does not use it as energy it is stored in fat cell
until it is used. If it is not used for a long period of time, it is
stored in the skin.
Triglycerides and Fatty acids
Triglycerides
are a type of fat molecule. They are made of one molecule of
glycerol and three fatty acids. Fatty acids make up different
types of fat. Fatty acids are in every type of fat. When
triglycerides are in a chain like form, they have now become fat.
After they have formed fat they go through the small intestine and they
are put in to cells then carried around the body in the cells to where
they are needed.
Bad Fat
The bad fats in your body
are saturated fat and trans fat. They both increase the risk of
getting heart disease. Saturated fat usually comes from foods
with animal fat. Trans fat is usually found in dairy products or
meat. They also both raise your blood pressure. When fats
turn become firmer, they have turned into bad fat.
Cholesterol
Cholesterol
is made out of a waxy substance made by the liver. It helps the liver
by building the walls for the liver and by helping digest food.
Cholesterol is usually found in animal fat. The liver makes
about 1000 milligrams of it every day. Cholesterol usually
travels through the blood stream fixing any holes in it. Even
though it sounds good it can still be a problem because cholesterol
sticks to itself and can begin to clog in the blood vessel. That can
cause heart disease. Then when the blood vessel is completely
clogged up, it causes a heart attack.
Cholesterol (LDL-HDL)
The
fat lower density lipids are a bad fat. The fat higher density lipids
are a good fat. LDL transfers cholesterol through the blood
streams while HDL’s transfers cholesterol to the organs in the
body. You can get heart disease by having high LDL’s and VLDL’s
because both of them transfer cholesterol through the blood stream and
if you have too many, they will carry too much cholesterol through the
blood stream and too much cholesterol will clog your blood vein
up. HDL stands for “high density lipids” and LDL stands for “low
density lipids.”
Fats in Foods
Some food labels
don’t tell you how much of cholesterol is in it. Oils like corn oil,
safflower oil, soybean oil, and salad dressing are mostly fat.
Lard is pig fat, just pure pig fat and it is used in recipes. People
have tested the fat that is in all dairy products and it causes cancer
if you eat too much of it.
Conclusion
Fat keeps
your organs working and gives us energy. Remember too much fat can give
you heart disease and heart attacks. I hoped you learned a lot from my
research. Like bad fat, cholesterol, fatty acids, triglycerides and
fats in foods.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned
The person I interviewed
is a family doctor named Dr. Julia Karol Robertson. I interviewed
her on January 21, 2008 at six o’clock pm. I interviewed her at her
doctor’s office, Terrace Heights Family Physicians. I chose her because
she is my family doctor and she was willing to take the time to answer
the question in a vocabulary that I could understand. She has been a
doctor for 23 and half years. After she went through high school,
she had and eleven years of college. She is the oldest of five
children. She told me that the things in health care that are new are
the way it is paid for, and the technology that has improved
studies. She said that Cancer and Heart disease kill the most
people and a healthy diet can help the way people feel. She
said that fat is made of mostly carbon hydrate on a glycerol base. She
told me that the worse thing that fat can do to your body is clogging
your arteries and inflame parts of the body. |

The Products I Created
My first product is a pamphlet. On the
front is says fat and has a picture of a doctor. On the left inside
page I have my mini report. On the right inside I have my true of false
game and on the back I have my fact sheet. My second product is a
jar full of gelation, peas, olives, and brussle sprouts. It represents
how fat cells expand as you grow and gain weight. I made two jars of
it. There is a little blurb about it on a card. My third product is
where you squeeze a French fry and all the fat comes out onto a brown
paper bag. On the brown paper bag you can see all the greases and oils. |
