2006

Hi, my name is Haley. At the time I conducted this project I was 11 years old and was in the fifth grade at Selah Intermediate School.

There are several reasons I decided to take this opportunity to study all about Hawaii. My aunt Lori lives there and I wanted to know why she liked it so much. Also, I wanted to learn about Pearl Harbor and all of Hawaii’s great history, and all about the Hawaiian culture.

Dedication
I would like to dedicate my project to my mom and dad, because they support me in what ever I want to do.

My Family
There are four people in my family.  My mom's name is Lynettte and she is a hard worker and very funny. She is a preschool teacher. My dad's name is Les and he is always doing something. He works at nursing homes and is very good at it. I also have a new baby sister her name is Autumn and she laughs at almost everything you do. She wiggles all over the place she sometimes makes me nervous. Then there's me. My family does everything together. We love each other like crazy.

My Hobbies and Interests
My favorite thing to do in my spare time is I like to go four wheeling and snowmobiling. We usually go camping in the summer and we spend time with our friends. I also like to collect postcards from where ever I go.

My Plans for the Future
I plan to work hard in school, getting good grades, especially in high school. I also hope I can get into a good college and get a Bachelor's degree. Then I hope to go to a well-respected Veterinarian School and become a famous vet.

The Products I Created

I created four products: a survey, a buzzer board, a pamphlet, and a blow up drawing.

Everyone in class conducted a survey. To create my survey, I thought of some possible questions that have to do with Hawaii. Most were factual but one was an opinion question. Next, I typed them on the computer, printed them out, had the teacher check them, and then I fixed the mistakes. I had Mrs. Viernes print 90 copies on lavender paper. I went to three fifth grade classrooms and conducted the survey. After I collected out all of my data, I counted all of the responses for the boys and then the girls. I entered these numbers into an Excel spreadsheet and calculated the percentages for the boys and girls. Then I made a graph for each question. I formatted each graph to be readable and colorful.

Almost everyone in the class created a game. I made a buzzer board. The first step was to write and type several questions and answers. When they were edited to perfection I printed them and cut them into small strips. I selected a good color for my background and a nice contrasting color to mount the questions and answers on. I carefully glued all the questions down the left side and all the answers down the right, making sure they were straight and evenly spaced. I also scrambled the order of the answers. I punched holes by each question and answer. On the back side I taped long pieces of aluminum foil to connect each question to each answer. I used masking tape to insulate the foil. I then tested each item with an electrical buzzer and made sure that each question went to only one answer. Finally, I printed and glued on a clever title, my credit sheet, and a picture.

My third product was a pamphlet. I typed a title and my credits on the front page with a picture of a palm tree. Inside I put a copy of my fact sheet on the left page and a true-false quiz and word scramble on the right. On the back page I created a cross word puzzle with several clues and answers. I picked a nice color and had  100 copies made to give to people at the project fair.

My fourth product was a blow up drawing. I found a good map of the state of Hawaii. I had Mrs. Viernes make a transparency. I put the transparency onto the overhead projector and projected the image onto a large piece of paper taped on the white board and traced the picture. When I was done I used crayons and markers to add some color and put labels to identify all the islands. I put the enlarged picture on my display.

How I Evaluate My Entire Project

 (1) How thorough and complete was my project?
My project is very thorough and complete because I was always on task and always had things done before of time and always did everything the best I could. So I think I did really good on everything.

(2) What would I do differently if starting over again?
If I had to start all over again something I would do differently would be to do a little bit more information. Also I would make my pamphlet a little bit more challenging than it is right now.

(3) What major strengths does my project have?
I think the major strengths my project has is that my display is very factional and also that it can draw many peoples attention by the way it is set up because it has very bright colors on it.  I met the class goal of becoming a fifth grade expert on my topic.

(4) What weaknesses or problems does my project have?
The weaknesses or problems my project has are my graphs because at first I didn’t understand how to do it then I had a wonderful friend help me figure it out and worked with me. Then I understood exactly what to do and how to do it.

(5) What did I learn to do better during this project?
I learned that I should take more time on my project to make it as perfect as I could get it during the time of only this project. Also that I should have more acts than I have right now.

(6) In what ways did I enjoy my study and work?
In ways I enjoyed my study and work by having fun with the subject and the way that I did it. I enjoyed interviewing Momi over the phone about Hawaii.

Who Helped Me With My Project

I would like to thank the following people:
•    Mr. Newkirk because he corrected all of my mistakes on my rough drafts.
•    My mom and my dad because they support me in what ever I do
•    Momi for letting me interview her. Thank you!
