Basic Information on National Parks There are 49 National Parks in the US. Some of the National Parks are volcanoes. There isn’t that many but Washington has one, Mt. Rainer. There is 3 National parks in Washington. All of the parks in Alaska became a park in 1980. All of the parks in Washington are wild life sanctuaries. Yellowstone National Park In 1872 Yellowstone first became our first real national park! This park is famous for its natural wonders. The park also has more geysers and hot springs than any other place in the world. It had more than two million acres of streaming geysers, crystal-clear lakes, waterfalls, and panoramic vistas. When Yellowstone became a park, glaciers and ice cap covered most of Yellowstone. This left lakes and rivers. Yellowstone has MANY alive volcanoes. Yellowstone was born of volcano eruptions. In the future Yellowstone plans to bring a bunch of wolves to the park and make a Wolf sanctuary to protect them. In Yellowstone the winter nights are from 20-30 degrees. In the day time the weather is from 30-40. The low 40s in the evening and a range between 75-80 in the afternoons. Snow falls in early Autumn (about six inches every year.) The upper slopes have heaver snow. In the fall the temperature is about30-65 and in the spring there is still snow in the mountains or still snows every now and then. The springtime is wet and mild, and windy. Glacier National Park In 1806 the Lewis & Clark expedition traveled within 50 miles of what is now Glacier NP. Also in the late 1800s the French came there to trap beaver. The great northern railroad was built by the park and that allowed more people in the area Homes were soon built and later villages or towns were developed. Grand Canyon National Park The Grand Canyon became a national park in 1908. It had a river that was 272 miles long which has now dried up. The highest point in the Grand Canyon is 1600 ft. above sea level. Mt. Rainer National Park Mt. Rainer is an active volcano and had its last eruption in 1800. It is the highest volcanic peak in the Cascades. About 5,000,000 years ago fiery forces blew molten rock 16,000 feet above sea level. 5,700 years ago Mt. Rainer erupted and a mountainside collapsed and 100 feet of mud went across 125 sq. miles. It became a park in Mt. Rainer has about 1.2 million visitors per year. It is also the largest glacier system in the US and it is the most beloved landmark. Mt. Rainer has 140 different kinds of birds, 54 kinds of mammals, and 900 types of plant species. Olympic has 200 birds, 70 mammals, and 1200 plants. Olympic National Park Olympic national park has the best Rainforest in North America. The park has about 3 to4 million visitors a year. Olympic National Park has a wide variety of animals. One very noisy bird is the Steller’s Jay. It has a cry that sounds like SHACK! SHACK! Elk are also common there and the black bear is one of the two largest predators, though you will almost never see one at Olympic. The bald Eagle is the 2nd largest predator. In Olympic there are 8 plants and 18 animals that are found nowhere else in the world.
