Research Summary

Actresses are women who act in movies, plays, and T.V. shows. Actresses are important  because,  they  are a source  of  entertainment.

Lucille  Ball was an actress  from the  20th century.  She was one of the first comediennes.  She was also one of the funniest ladies from the  1900’s.

History
Acting  has been  around for quite awhile. In fact, humans  started  acting  in  the  5th century. Acting was started by the ancient  Romans, but during the 6th century, the Christian Church put a stop to it. Then, drama was re-introduced in the Middle Ages. To please the Christian Church, the writers of the plays made the plays more religious in focus. Roles played by Priests, amateurs, and pro-actors toured Europe.  All the parts in the plays were acted by men. No women were allowed to act in front of an audience. Then, in the mid-17th century, women were allowed on stage.

The first American acting company was established in Williamsburg. In the next century, actors and actresses became stars. Acting became very popular in the 20th century. Film, radio, and television offered more opportunities  than ever. The stars were known for their big money and luxurious style of living. Acting has changed a lot since the 5th century.

William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was a very famous writer. He wrote some of the most famous plays ever performed on stage. For example; He wrote the world famous play “Romeo and Juliet”. William was born on April 23, 1564. His parents’ names were John Shakespeare and Mary Alden. On November 28, 1582, William got married to a woman named Anne Hathaway. She was 26 and pregnant. He was 18 years old. On May 16, 1583,  they had their first girl. Her name was Susanna. A few years later, on February 2, 1585, Anne gave birth to twins. Their names were Hamnet and Judith. Unfortunately, Hamnet died at the age of 11. On April 23, 1616 (His birthday) William Shakespeare passed away. Here is one of his poems:

“ Good friend, for Jesus’ forbeare
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones”

Types of Actresses
There are many types of actresses. There are reality, romance,  comedy, and  television actresses. For example; Lucille Ball was a comedienne (a woman who does comedy routines) and Hilary Duff acts in reality movies. Not many children know of actresses who act in romance movies, though. A lot of people don’t notice how many types of acting there really are.

Where the job can lead
The job of being an actress can lead to many things. Some things are good, some things not so good.

The good things are: They’re always doing what they love to do……. ACT!!!  Also, some actresses get rich and famous  and live in luxury pretty much their whole life.

Now, there are many bad things, too. Sometimes when they just want some free time to go to dinner for example, they can’t do it because they would get attacked  by their fans. Also, sometimes the actresses get so rich that they become  greedy and spoiled, and it’s not fun for other people.

The job of an actress is a very risky job. But, luckily, the job can lead to better things, too.

Lucille Ball
Lucille Ball was one of the first comediennes. She was one of the funniest ladies from the 1900’s. Lucy was a role model to all actresses of her time. Now, lets take a look at her personal life:

The Basic Information
There’s a lot to know about Lucille Ball. Lucy was born in Jamestown, NY on August 8th, 1911. Her full name was Lucille Desiree Ball. Lucille had two parents. They’re names were Desiree Evelyn Hunt and Henry Dunnel Ball. Lucy died on April 26, 1989 at the age of seventy-eight.

Her Life
Believe it or not, Lucy met her future husband on the set of “Too Many Girls” while filming in Cuba. Although Lucille was 5 years older than Desi, her soon to be husband, they really loved each other. Then, in 1940, Lucy and Desi got married. After a couple years of being married, Lucille gave birth to her first child, Lucie.

Lucille joined a radio show called “My Favorite Husband”. A little while after they started the show, they thought it would be better on television. They were planning on just transferring the radio show onto T.V. But, Lucille wanted Desi to be her T.V husband. The producers thought that Americans would not believe that an American redhead was married to a Cuban bandleader. Lucille said “I am married to a Cuban bandleader.” So, they let him be her T.V husband, too. After months of planning, they finally started filming. The shows new name was “I Love Lucy”. In 1952, Lucille brought her 2nd child into the world. Lucille Ball was the first actress to ever act when she was pregnant. Her new son’s name was Desi Jr. . The show filmed the baby’s delivery. That episode was known as the most watched show ever on television. People described it as the most touching thing they had ever seen.

A little after the child was born, Lucille was accused of being a communist. Everybody was in shock. Of course, Desi did not believe them. He defended her in every way. In fact, he just said,”I love that redhead. In fact, that’s the only red thing about her.”. She was back. Everyone clapped and whistled. Their favorite actress was back! Lucy proudly walked out onto the stage and waved to everyone. Lucy and her fans were very excited.

On March 2nd 1960, the last episode of “I Love Lucy” was filmed. The famous singer, Edie Adams performed one of her favorite songs. For some reason, Lucille and Desi weren’t talking to each other. After the last episode, Lucille filed for divorce. Lots of people didn’t understand. After recovering, Lucy started a new show. It was called “The Lucy Show”. Lucy’s friend, Vivian Vance, co-starred as Lucy’s scheme-following friend, Viv. Lucille and Vivian had been friends for 25 years and had made over 300 episodes together. Lucille fell in love with a man named Gary Morton. Gary and Lucy got married. At the end of Lucy’s career, Desi Arnaz died. Lucille’s face was the most seen human face. Lucille Ball died on comedienne, Carol Burnette’s birthday.

Her shows
Lucille appeared in many shows. She had four shows that were on television and one show on the radio. Her four T.V. shows were; “ I Love Lucy “, “ Life With Lucy “, “ Here’s Lucy “, and “ The Lucy Show “. The radio show that started it all was called “ My Favorite Husband “. Of course all of these shows were full of humorous events. Lucille was in even more movies.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned

For my SOAR project this year, I interviewed Kimberly Lynn Ratificar. The interview was held from January 4th- January 6th. Since actresses are busy, I interviewed Kimberly by sending her a few questions at a time and just waited for a reply. I chose to interview Kimberly because she was an actress and it seemed like she had enough time on her hands. At one point, I asked her who her role models were. She said that she loved Lucille Ball’s wacky sense of humor (what a coincidence!). She also said that Julie Andrews was her role model, too. Now that the interview's done, I know that Kimberly was the right one to interview. She has helped me a lot with my report. Kimberly was a wonderful interviewee.
