Research Summary
Boeing is a major company that makes high tech
airplanes for Asia, Europe and many other countries. Boeing’s first
plane was built in 1903; the name was B&W. Boeing makes passenger
planes and cargo planes that carry mail and packages. Boeing has to
make sure that everything in a plane is perfect before it leaves the
factory.
Boeing is one of the most widely known aeronautical
manufacturers.
HISTORY
William Boeing founded Boeing in 1901. Boeing got his first idea of
making planes at an auction for ideas of plane. B-247’s were very high
tech. In total 13,000 were sold. They also carried passengers more
comfortably. One year Boeing bought 60 B-247, each costing $60,000.
The B-247’s ability to fly would take 7 1/2 hours off the flight time
from Los Angeles to New York.
TYPES OF
There are many different types of planes in the world. Here is a
couple: Testing planes, Bombers and Cargo planes. Testing planes are
planes that Boeing gets ideas from. Most of the time people use bombers
for war. On rare occasions they let people see them at large
celebrations. Cargo planes are used a s for carrying people and bags.
Military planes and bombers are usually much smaller than cargo planes.
FUTURE
Right now Boeing has around 117,000 employees. The future will lead to
more employees so they will build planes faster and bigger. Planes
would have more room, fly faster and have less plane crashes. They will
have bigger capacity and more bombs. Boeing is working on an
environmentally safe plane.
MISSLES
The Atomic Bomb was invented by Albert Einstein in 1945. The atomic
modern bomb can carry thousands of times more power than the first one
dropped on Hiroshima. The Atomic Bomb is very powerful.
FACTS
The Boeing 777 can fly with 300 passengers for 7,000 miles. The jumbo
jet (747) can carry 400 people at the same time! About 2.5 million
people fly on planes each day.
PLANES
Boeing has made hundreds of thousands of planes. Boeing has made many
different planes in the last 102 years that they have been in business.
There are many families of planes. Did you know that the 747 actually
came from smaller plane?
ENDING
Boeing is an amazing company I learned a ton about Boeing and I hope
you did too.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned
On November 21, 2004, I interviewed Thoralf Gamlem. He was a good pick
because he worked for Boeing for 45 years as an experienced Business
Analyst. Business Analysts make sure that Boeing does not over-spend in
some areas and help decide whether to build a new plane or not. Mr.
Gamlem told me that Boeing risks millions of dollars to make planes,
and he helped decide if they should risk all that money on that
particular plane.
He told me some former workers went on strike because they did
not like the way Boeing was treating them. A couple of reasons they
wanted to strike were that they didn’t think they were getting paid
enough or they got laid off. So of course Boeing had to give them money
or hire them back.
The reason Boeing is so big is because they keep making planes everyone
likes. The other reason is obviously because each design of plane gets
higher tech. The main reason for their success is that Boeing sells
planes for the lowest prices and has the best products.
There are a lot of airlines out in the world but the chain of airliners
that buys the most planes are the European and Asian countries.
Aircraft do not have to have engines to fly. The only plane with that
privilege in our modern time is a Glider. Most of the world war two
planes were propelled planes. They can have a propelled plane but it
must have wings. The main parts of a plane are the fuselage, wings;
engine, the landing gear, and the control surfaces, like the rudder,
elevators, and ailerons.
People decide to fly rather than to travel by car is because they know
they are safer and it is faster than car. There are also many places
that cannot be reached by car, like across oceans.
Planes have to fly high (often around 30,000 feet above the ocean or
land) to avoid hitting storms. Storms cause turbulence to the plane and
sometimes wreck them.
Every plane at Boeing gets tested a lot before it is sold. They test
every single part of the plane. They also do functional tests. When
they are doing a functional test the landing gear, surface and control
services gear are checked.
