Research Summary
Introduction
This report is all about Hypnotism and Hypnotherapy. Hypnotism is a state of mind in which you are put into a sleep-like trance, so you can achieve greater things such as stopping addictions like smoking or starting to feel more confident. Hypnotherapy is a career. People go see a hypnotherapist so they stop anger addiction or forget unhappy pasts. There is no magic involved and you can never get someone to do what they don’t want to do.

Uses of Hypnotism
There are many ways to use hypnotism like activating anesthesia which makes you numb and you lose all sensation. You would feel no pain so it would help when going through childbirth, surgery, and other painful procedures. You could also use it for blocking bad childhoods and remembering things you’ve blocked from your memory by yourself. It can also soothe nervousness. When public speakers get nervous, they can use hypnotherapy to boost confidence. Some scientists use hypnotism to research the body and mind, like how it works or what causes it to respond to hypnosis. It can also be used to stop addictions like smoking, drugs, drinking and other things.

Related Careers
There are many careers related to hypnotism like hypnotherapy which is when someone uses hypnotism to resolve a person’s problems. There is circus or entertainment hypnotism which usually turns out to be fake but people enjoy it. There are also detective hypnotists who hypnotize to find details of murder, robbery, and other crimes.

Future
Many have different ideas for the future of Hypnotism. Scientists think in the future there will be ways to measure the effectiveness of Hypnotherapeutic treatments. There may be objective scales to categorize responsiveness of clients. They are also trying to unlock secrets of mind using hypnotism but also some think it will remain the same for many years.

Related therapies
There are many different kinds of therapy not just talking and hypnotherapy. One kind of therapy is called massage therapy. It is mostly used to relax people. This can help sexually abused people by letting them feel okay to be touched because they are sometimes very sensitive after the abuse. There is also a light therapy where the person is set by bright colorful lights to make them feel better about life.

Hypnotherapists
A Hypnotherapist is a person who hypnotizes people to help with their problems. They could have addictions like smoking, drugs, drinking, and other problems. They can also help you with forgetting bad childhood pasts and can activate anesthesia (numbness in body) that can help when going through surgery and other painful problems or procedures. They make around $20,000 to $30,000 a year and usually charge $50 to $150 dollars an hour. Hypnotherapists can help many people in many different ways. Boosting confidence in public speakers is a common treatment as mentioned above.

Auto (Self) Hypnosis
Auto hypnosis (or self hypnosis as most call it) is when you use hypnotism to achieve greater things to make yourself more confident. Many use self hypnosis. Usually they will lay in a nice quiet place and imagine themselves walking down an endless path counting from 10 down to 1, and think what they wanted to achieve. It would soon seem like a dream and then it would feel sort of different and they would know they were in a trance. To end the trance they would simply turn around and walk the other way and count the other way like from 1 up to 10 and soon if successful they would be dreaming like a common nap.

History

Franz Anton Mesmer invented animal magnetism which soon led to hypnotism. He was called the father of hypnotism. In the mid 1800’s James Braid, a French physician, used the term “hypnosis”. Also in ancient times Egyptians and Greeks thought hypnotism was magic and used it many times in rituals.

Tools
Hypnotherapists don’t often use pendulums (as shown in movies). There are many items they use but mostly they use their voice. Sometimes they use the picture their client likes the most to soothe them so they won’t be as nervous. They use relaxing skills so there aren’t many tools, but they do use a few to their clients liking or a fixed spot.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned
I interviewed Andrew Whitmont a clinical psychologist. He’s been working as a psychologist for thirty years. He became this because he was curious about how they fixed problems. He completed nine years of college to become a therapist. He said he enjoyed his job because he gets to find out how people think and feel. He never really knew when he wanted to do the job he just decided he wanted to do it. He thinks a problem is that the insurance companies are making more restrictions and it’s harder to help people with some of their problems.  Some problems involve stress, depression, bad habits, confusion, anger, and many other symptoms.

For the future Andrew thinks therapy will be more effective and there will be ways to rate the effectiveness but he said its possible that it won’t change at all. He said there wasn’t a most important person for the history because he thinks everyone is important and they all fix problems. As I was about to end my interview he asked me why I chose my topic I told him I was interested in how they fix the problems. He said, “why didn’t you ask that question?” He said they work with the people to encourage their happiness, inner wisdom, or love for life to grow stronger.
