Ashley B.

2005

Hi, my name is Ashley. At the time I conducted this project I was 11 years old and was in the fifth grade at Selah Intermediate School.

Ever since I was four, I've had a strong interest in gymnastics.  That is why I decided to take this opportunity to study all about this sport. I’ve taken gymnastics classes since I was four years old. I wanted to learn about the events they do in the Olympics. It turns out that I learned even more.

Dedication
I would like to dedicate my project to my mom and dad because they helped me find a person to interview and took me to the library to locate a lot of books on my topic.

My Family
There are 3 people in my family.  My mom's name is Debbie and she works for the state of Washington at DSHS. During her spare time she likes to read, watch t.v., and spend time with me. My dad's name is Brad. He works at Freeth Distributing for Shell gas stations. During his spare time he likes to watch t.v., play games on the computer, and spend time with me. I don't have any brothers and sisters. I love both of my parents very much.

My Hobbies and Interests
One of my favorite things to do during my spare time is to read. I like to watch t.v. and play games on the computer. I like to draw and do art projects. I like to play basketball, go swimming, and jump on my trampoline. On weekends during the summer time, I like to go camping. When I go camping I like to sit around the campfire and make smores. I like to ride my bike and I like to go boating.

My Plans for the Future
I plan to work really hard and get good grades in school. I plan to graduate high school and go to college. I want to go to Washington State University. I want to study to be teacher. Then once I graduate college, I want to be a kindergarten or first grade teacher because I like teaching people how to do things and I love little kids. If I'm not a teacher, I might want to be something like an accountant because I'm really good at math.

The Products I Created

I created four products: a survey, a buzzer board, a pamphlet, and a blow-up drawing.

Everyone in class conducted a survey. To create my survey, I thought of some possible questions that have to do with gymnastics. Next, I typed them on the computer, printed them out, had the teacher check them, and then I fixed my mistakes. I had the teacher put them on pink paper and had about 60 copies made. I went to two fifth grade classrooms and conducted the survey. After I collected my data, I counted all of the responses for the boys and the girls. I entered these numbers into an Excel spreadsheet. Then I made a graph for each question. I formatted each graph to be readable and colorful.

To create a buzzer board, I first typed ten questions that have to do with gymnastics. Then I printed them, fixed my mistakes, cut them out, and put pink borders around them. Then I picked the color of my board.  I chose pink. I lined up the questions on one side and the answers on the other, making sure they were mixed up, and glued them one inch from the edge. I punched holes next to every question and every answer. Then I numbered the questions with the answers on the back. I drew lines from the question to the correct answer. I put a piece of foil long enough to cover the two holes with a one by them. I put tape all the way over it and made sure there wasn’t any foil sticking out. I followed those two steps with all of the other questions and answers. After I finished that I got a buzzer and tested to make sure all of the questions matched up with the correct answers. Next I put the title, my first and last name, and when I made it and put that on the top. At the bottom I put a picture.

Then I created a pamphlet. To create that I first did my cover page. It had my topic, my name, when I created it, and a picture. On the second page I put a fact sheet with lots of information on gymnastics. On the third page I put some information about the seven types of gymnastics. On the back page I created a crossword puzzle.

The last product I created was my blow-up drawing. I first found a picture I liked and had the teacher make a transparency of it. Then I put the overhead transparency on the overhead projector and taped a piece of paper on the white board. I traced the drawing onto the paper. I colored the picture. Next I used a black marker and outlined the drawing.
