Research Summary
The US Air Force is an air mobile armed force, much like other branches of the military: the Army, Navy, Marines, and the Coast Guard. There are 317,281 enlisted airmen and 67,719 officers in the USAF.

WHAT THEY DO
The men and women in the Air Force protect and fight for our country. They focus mostly on attacks by air from planes, helicopters, and missiles. There are many careers in the Air Force including engineering, computers, maintaining planes, piloting, etc. The jobs are fit for anybody with the right training. There are over 150 Air Force careers from piloting to fire fighting, and mountain climbing to scuba diving. They also use satellites and extremely powerful radar systems.

The stealth is a very famous plane. It cost $1,000,000,000 ? one billion dollars! There are 2 types of stealth planes:B-2 Spirit and F-117 Nighthawk. July is the month that the Air Force bought the last 59 stealth planes, the Lockheed F-117A .The F-22 is the least commonly used plane in the air force, the F-16 and 15 are used the most.

TRAINING
To enter the Air Force you will need a social security card, birth certificate, high school diploma, and driver’s license (if you have one). Basic training is the first thing that happens after joining the Air Force.. Basic training is where airmen learn to fire M-16 rifles, get their first military haircut, and learn Air Force customs and courtesies. Some people need technical training and pilots need flying courses.

Officer training in the U.S. Air Force is provided through the federal Air force Academy. In addition the Reserve Officer Training Corps.(ROTC) is offered at many colleges and universities. Other options are the Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer training school (OTS), The National Guard, the uniformed services university of health science, and other programs. All are very tempting and all are very awesome choices for those who are seeking an air force career. Federal service academies like the Air Force Academy offer a 4-year college program that provides you with a Bachelor of Science degree. ROTC trains about 1,000 Air Force units at participating colleges. Trainees take 2 to 5 hours of military instruction a week and any other college courses. You have to study computers, science, and math to get in the Air Force. College graduates may earn a commission in the armed forces through OCS or OTS programs in the Air Force and National Guard. These officers generally must serve their obligation on active duty. Each service has a different promotional ladder . The Enlisted contract obligates the service to provide the agreed-upon job, rating, pay cash bonuses for enlistment in certain occupations, medical and other benefits, occupational training and continuing education. In return you will serve for the time specified,(6 to 8 years) usually.

HISTORY
The USAF became a separate military service in 1947 and is now the most powerful in the world. Before 1947 it was a branch of the army, called the Army Air Corps. In 1957 the USAF launched its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) which is a nuclear bomb. In 1905 the Army bought their first plane from the Wright brothers. That was the beginning of the US Air Force.

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned

On January 27, 2004 I interviewed Joey C. Bailey. I thought he would be a good choice because he is a technical sergeant and has served in the Air Force for 18 years. The interview was at the Air Force recruiting office in the valley mall (Union Gap).
He thinks the biggest change in the Air Force is that it’s also a space force; Joey also said that in the future there would be a lot more space command. Joey explained to me that the USAF gets treated better than any other branch. He thinks one of the most important people in the Air Force was General Hap Arnold.
