Ethan W.

2003

Hi, my name is Ethan. At the time I conducted this project I was 11 years old and was in the fifth grade at Selah Intermediate School.

The Products I Created
Everyone in class conducted a survey.  First I wrote a few possible questions and answers.  I typed them and had them checked by the teacher, then fixed my mistakes.  I learned how to make response boxes and how to put two copies on one page in two columns. I selected a color and had 100 copies made.  Next I made appointments and actually conducted the survey three classes.  After I collected all of my data I counted all the responses for the boys and for the girls.  I entered these numbers into an Excel spread sheet.  Then I made a graph for each question.  I formatted each graph to be readable and colorful.

I drew a blow-up of an airplane.  First I went into World Book Encyclopedia and found a plane I liked.  Then I asked Mrs. Helms to copy it onto an overhead transparency.  I drew it onto a piece of paper and colored it.

I created a pamphlet on the computer.  First I made a crossword puzzle on Crossword Companion.  Then I imported it into my pamphlet.  I also imported my fact sheet into my pamphlet.  Next I scrambled words and made true and false questions.  Finally I went to www.boeing.com and got a picture to put on the front of my pamphlet.

My Family
My mom's name is Lynda.  She is a hair dresser and works at home.  My dad's name is Tim.  He is a job counselor for Work Source.  I have one dog.  His name is Phoenix.  He is a miniature schnauzer. My mom has eight brothers and sisters so I have a lot of cousins.  We have family get togethers a lot so I see my family most of the time.

My Hobbies and Interests
My hobbies are playing baseball, playing golf, riding dirt bikes, riding quads, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, biking, watching TV, and playing on the computer.  In baseball I mostly play catcher.  I play drums in band. It is fun because I get to play many different types of insturments.

My Plans for the Future
In the future I plan to go to Oregon State Univercity and become a dentist.

Dedication
I would like to dedicate my project to my parents, because they have always helped when I need it and taught me not to be afraid to ask for help.

Why I Chose This Topic
Ever since I was 9, I've had a strong interest in planes. That is why I decided to take this opportunity to study all about Boeing Commercial Jets.

(1)  How thorough and complete was my project?
I think my project was very thorough, except for the area of my report that talked about the years certain planes came out.  Also I should have told more about the Boeing Company itself instead of just talk about the planes they make.

(2)  What would I do differently if starting over again?
If I were to start over again I would probably try to take a few more notes than I did.  Also I would try to be more efficient in my information than I was.

(3)  What major strengths does my project have?
A major strength in my project is the information about the 777.  I found more information about that particular plane then all the information about the other planes put together.

(4)  What weaknesses or problems does my project have?
Some weaknesses and problems my project has are I think I should have had just a little more information then I did.  Also it was hard to find information about certain planes so I had more information about some planes than others.

(5)  What did I learn to do better during this project?
During this project I learned to do a lot of things better. One was making borders.  Another was making pamphlets.

(6)  In what ways did I enjoy my study and work?
I enjoyed my study and work because I got to study a topic I like and that is interesting.  Another is being able to be a 5th grade expert on my project.

I would like to thank the following people:
  •  Mrs. Helms for always being willing to help me,
  • Mr. Newkirk for teaching me about how I can become a 5th grade expert on my project,
  • My parents for believing every step of the way,
  • Mrs. Rice's, Mrs. Mortimer’s, and Mr. Dulude’s classes for participating in my survey
