What They Do

Lawyers try to make sure that their client gets treated fairly. If their client is being sued than the lawyer tries to prove that their client is innocent.

Lawyers study about laws and rules. These laws and rules help protect the freedoms and rights of our people. The definition of lawyer is a female/male who is licensed to represent people in a court of law who fight for their client’s rights as a human.

In a trial, lawyers talk in front of a judge and usually a jury. In court cases without a jury the judge decides the verdict.

Some lawyers help people with taxes and business contracts. Some help with legal documents such as wills and deeds. A lot of lawyers get so busy their jobs get stressful. They sometimes feel like taking a vacation.

If a judge is having trouble finding a verdict he can schedule a recess and call the lawyers into his office. He/she can then talk to the lawyers in private. If the lawyers don’t give the judge the information he/she needs the judge can talk to the clients to try and understand it more clearly.

If a lawyer disagrees with something another lawyer says then he/she can say "sidebar’’ or "I object’’. If the lawyer says "I object" then the judge can say something like "carry on’’ or looks at him/her and nods. Lawyers should not interrogate or yell at the other lawyer’s client. If lawyers do this they will most likely be fined for it. If a lawyer swears in the courtroom to the client or to anybody else they will most definitely be fined for it.

Where They Work

Lawyers usually work in a firm. Sometimes they own the firm and sometimes they are signed on as a partner.

When lawyers get ready to go to work they are supposed to wear clothes that are conservative. The courtroom is a place for finding a wrongdoer and punishing or fining them.

What Do They Earn

Lawyers get very good salaries. Sometimes every two years of paychecks put together can add up to one million dollars! That’s a lot of money!

What Is Bad About This Job

The bad thing about this job is that it is a lot of stress. If you are behind on your paperwork than you are in deep trouble. (Especially if the court date is tomorrow.)

Minimum education

You must have completed four years of college, and five years of law school.

If you think twelve years of school is hard enough think about nineteen or more years of school!

If students know they want to be a lawyer in high school they can take extra classes such as foreign languages, government, English, and extra curricular might be helpful.
