Research Summary
Australia is a continent in the Southern Hemisphere. There are animals
like the Koala’s. They eat only Eucalyptus, which gives them food and water.
Koala’s can only be found in Australia. They spend most of their lives
in the trees. The babies are called cubs. They stay with the mother for
6 months, then go off on their own.
Kangaroo’s also are only found in Australia. They can jump about 20
feet in one leap. When they get in fights they will stand on their tails
and start boxing and kicking each other. They sometimes do this to fight
for other female.
Duckbilled Platypuses can be found in Australia too. They were meant
to be a joke. Then when the King came to Australia with about 20,000 people
CPT. James Cook showed the King an animal they had never seen before. It
had a bill like a duck, skin like a dolphin, and had some hair the King
officially named it the Duckbilled Platypus. They are now a rare species.
The bird called the Castaward is a flightless bird.
It has a legendary head that looks like a helmet. Then, when one of James
Cook’s crewmembers saw it he shot it and showed everybody. Then they showed
it to the King. The King was amazed and gave it the name of Castaward.
People thought that Australia was a hidden continent. Then, when Captain
James Cook came to Australia he found that he was not the first person
to discover Australia. It was the aborigines. They were a friendly tribe
that taught James Cook and his crewmembers a lot about the wild and what
foods were edible. The Aborigines also showed Captain James Cook and his
crewmembers how to hunt for animals for food. Then the Aborigines showed
them the territory of Australia. After the English felt like they didn’t
need the aborigines anymore, they would shoot them.
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest extending coral
reef. It has been around for millions of years and grows about 1-2 feet
every day. The Great Barrier Reef has many different species and animals
in it. It grows by animals dying and having their skeletons combine with
the coral reef. Many animals and plants could not live without the coral
reef because it provides food, minerals, and shelter for them. The Great
Barrier Reef has over 2900 individual reefs and has about 900 different
islands. It stretches over 2000 kilometers and has a lot of marine life.
It has over 1500 different types of fish, 4000 types of mollusks, 350 types
of echinoderms and 350 types of corals. The average water temp. is 22 degrees
Celsius.
Sydney, Australia has a population of 3,719,000. Most of the
people were British, Irish, and immigrants. The Aborigines has a population
of 0.6 percent of Australia. It is one of Australia’s best known states.
It is the capitol of Australia and New South Wales. It can be found in
the New South Wales, and CPT. James Cook hit the shore in southern part
of it. In the winter of 2000 for the Olympics held in Sydney, Australia.
Sydney is the oldest and largest city in all of Australia. The mean temperature
is 55degrees- 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall in Sydney is
47 inches in a year. Sydney covers over 4800 square miles. Sydney also
has the tallest building. It is called the Sydney Tower and reaches a height
of over 1000 ft. tall. The Sydney Harbor Bridge was the largest bridge
in the world. It was completed in 1932. It was made to symbolize Sydney
for many years.
Queensland can be found in the northeastern part of Australia.
It is the second largest state of Australia. It covers 1,727,200 square
kilometers (666,880 miles.) By doing this it takes up 22% of Australia's
land area.
The Georgina River is in the center of Australia and stretches
over 700 miles long. It flows Southeast to the south corner of the state
Queensland. When there is high rainfall Georgina and Diamantina combine
and flow to connect to Lake Eyre. After joining with Hamilton River. It
is known as a creek. The drainage basin goes for 14,710 square miles. Lake
Eyre is a salt lake in the central part of Australia. Lake Eyre connects
with the Goyder Channel. It covers about 3,600 square miles. It is 52 feet
below sea level, making it the lowest point in Australia. Lake Eyre was
named after Eduard John Eyre, who was a British explorer who came in 1840.
Matthew Flinders was first to circumnavigate Tasmania in 1801-1803. Robert
O’ Hara Burke and William Wills were the First Europeans to cross the continent
from North to South in 1860. Settlements were established in Hobart in
1803. Settlements were also established in Tasmania, Queensland in 1824.
Victoria was established for settlements in 1835. Southern Australia was
established also for settlements in 1836. Australia has one of the oldest
mysteries in the world. The English were the first to figure out the mystery
of the "Terra Australiaus". James Cook landed in Botany Bay S of Sydney,
Australia. He discovered the East Coast of Australia brought with him scientists
and botanists.
The Royal National Park was founded in 1879. It is the oldest
National Park in the world. It was found by CPT.James Cook. It is in the
city of Sydney, Australia. Then, he founded and named Botany Bay in 1776.
The aborigines were an oriental tribe that came a long time ago.
People do not when they traveled to Australia, but scientists think their
ancestors were living in Australia even before people thought something
was there. Then, when Captain James Cook came to Australia he saw strange
and exotic animals such as a Dingo, and Duckbilled Platypus'. He found
out that the dingo was a carnivore. Which means that they ate meat. They
would eat things from Koala's up to 200-pound animals. When they are alone
they will hunt small animals like Koala's, but when they are in packs they
will hunt Kangaroo's and larger animals.
Later more settlers came to Australia. They brought Camesto's
to Tasmania, Australia. They brought them there because they becoming endangered
in their country and were no longer safe from hunters and poachers.
Then more and more people started coming to Australia. More
settlements were being made and more landed was needed to be chartered.
Then laws were made. Later people would bring more and more animals to
Australia. After wards more technology was being made and the population
was increasing. Now Australia has about as much technology as the United
States. It is a very modern day type of continent.
I think that in the future Australia will still be very modern
day. It may even be the most advanced continent in the world. I also think
that it will spread out over the world more and more and will have its
own continent.
Who I Interviewed
And What I Learned
On January 15th I interviewed Mr. Arambul at his classroom. Mr. Arambul
was a good choice because he lived in Australia for one whole year. He
was a teacher in Tasmania. He knew a lot of the answers to my questions.
He told me that the aborigines came a long time ago but nobody knows when
they did. Also that scientists think that the aborigines were born there
because their ancestors were there a long time before the Aborigines and
long before the "Terra Australiaus" mystery was revealed. I also learned
that Captain James Cook was a famous explorer who hit the shore in Botany
Bay, Australia. He then told me that Captain James Cook came in the year
1776. Then I asked him what his thoughts were on the future of Australia.
He said "I think that Australia will always be a modern day continent with
technology like ours. |
