Research Summary

Cinematography is the process of making movies. There are very many careers for Cinematography like the director, Assistant director, and art director. Sometimes movie can cost a fortune  (Paying the crew, special effects, paying for locations outside the studio). Projectors have a really bright light to project the picture on the film on the screen. In one second you see 24 slides on the film.
Thomas Edison made the first movie. He made the movie in a Kintescope. To see the movie you look through the eyeholes, and then turn the crank. The movie was usually 10 seconds long. George Eastman produced the first full-length movie ever. He produced it in 1923. He used 35mm film for his movie. Lousle Prince (1888) made light sensitive paper. This helped make film because film is light sensitive paper.
There are very many careers for filmmaking. One of the careers is the Producer. The Producer is like the boss. He sets the budget for the crew. He chooses what the movie is going to be about. He also chooses who’s going to work on the set. Another career is the Director. The Director directs helps the crew through the whole movie. He also helps the Producer choose the crew. Another important job is the Assistant Director. There are two Assistant Directors on the set. The 1st Assistant Director works with the Director while shooting the movie. The 2nd Assistant Director helps the 1st Assistant Director get the crew in place. Also he manages the schedule for the movie. The Cast Director hires the actors for the movie. He does audition’s to see which actors are good for the role and who aren’t good for the role. The screenwriter is another very important job. The screenwriter helps the producer choose what the movie is going to be about. After they choose what the movie is going to be about he does an outline on the movie. Then after that he does a two to three pages describing the plot. Then he describes the movie with the dialogue. Then finally he writes the script for all the actors. The Unit Production Manager helps the Producer choose the crew. The Unit Production Manager also sets up permits for scenes outside the studio. He also decides what to buy for the movie. The Makeup Artist is another very important job. The Makeup Artist does the makeup for the movie. They have very many things to work with like sponges, fake eyelashes, brushes, wigs, and latex. For blood they use colored corn syrup. The Art Director has a very important job. He’s the on who makes all the sets. To make the sets he first has to make blueprints of the set. Then he will go show them to the Producer. If there approved by the Director he will start constructing the sets. The Costume Designer is another important job. The costume designer is the one who makes all the costumes for the movie. The Costume Designer usually chooses how to make the costumes by the lighting, and the scene it will be wore in. Technicians are the ones who make all the special effects for the movie. They are also the ones who set off all the explosions on the set. The sound engineer is the on who makes the soundtrack. First he takes the tape with the Actors voices on it, and then takes the film with the music and sounds on it and mixes the two together. This is only some of the careers in cinematography.
Animated movies are mostly mad in a computer, but some of it is drawn on paper. Sometimes cartoons can be made out of models moved just a little bit every shot. In movies models can be used to make things look like they’re crashing, or sinking.
There are five types of film today. The smallest of the five is the 8mm film. It is used today for home movies. The next smallest one is 9.5mm film. That type of film is used for Amateur movies. 16mm film was used in 1923 for home movies. 35mm film is what they use today for movies. The biggest film is 70mm. It is used for Imax movies.
There are three different kinds of movies. One of the three types of film is an adaptation film. An adaptation film is a film that relates to a newspaper article, a book etc. Another type of film is Non-fiction film. A Non-fiction movie is something like a biography, autobiography, Documentary or anything else relating to history. The last one is fiction movie. A fiction movie is not true. It is movies like comedies, Dramas, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.
A projector is very important in a theater. A projector has a really bright light that goes through the film and projects on to the screen. When the picture is projected it has to go through a lens; the lens then focuses the picture. When the light hits the screen it then projects light back to you so you can see the picture. The film goes through a projector so fast that you can see 24 pieces of film in a second.
A sound track contains the sound for the movie. When the sound engineer gets the tape with the actor’s voices on it, and gets the tape with the music and extra noises on it the sound engineer will mix the two tapes together.
There are very many special effects you can do in a movie. One is to make it look like someone got shot. Technicians use an air-compressed gun, and fire a gelatin
bullet that makes a red color on the skin. Another special effect is explosions. To make an explosion Technicians usually use dynamite. To make smoke fog, smoke, or anything else like that. Technicians use mineral oil and heat it up. Then technicians spray all over the set. To make it look like it’s raining in a scene, technicians use tri-pod sprinklers and, and they use fans to make the water go where they want. To make it look like someone is flying. They first film the background, and then film the person in a flying position and then mix the two pictures together. Stunt men have a very important job. Stunt men have tons of pads to wear. Stunt men have to were elbow pads, hip pads, spinal pads, chest pad, knee pad, helmet, and fire proof under hood for fire scenes. If a stunt men has to fall off a building theirs a huge cushion at the bottom of the building. A full-length movie uses usually 1.5 miles of film.
The most that is going to change in the future is how movies can be made. More people can make great movies with digital, inexpensive equipment. It’ll be a lot easier to make the movies. Another thing that is going to change in the future is that movies will be sent over the web. If movies are sent over the web we won’t have to go to movie theaters and pay money to see a movie. People can make those movies with inexpensive equipment, and can show there movies to other people that they can’t in a movie theater. That is what will change

Who I Interviewed And What I Learned
On January16, 2001 I Interviewed Connie Little at YCTV. Mrs. Little was a good choice for my interview because she has had 17 years experience making documentaries. She gave me lots of good information. Here are some of the most important things I learned.
Mrs. Little showed me that movies can be made without people in it. The documentary she made was made all with pictures. It was on Don Larson. The documentary was called "From Boy Scout to JetFighter." It told about the whole life of Don Larson. She got pictures from when he was over sea flying in a jet plane. The research for her documentary took two years. The reason why she makes documentary’s is she wants to make something the she can remembered for very many years after she makes it.
Mrs. Little says that the thing that has changed the most is computers. She said that we have a lot of things that we used to not have 25 years ago. She also said it was very hard to make a movie 25 years ago. So there have been a lot of changes sense then way back in the 50’s.
Mrs. Little gave me a lot of info. She helped a lot with my report. I think she is one of the best people to go to for my topic.
