American Pioneers

Religion, Tradition, and Fun

Pioneers worshiped even when there weren't any churches by reading out of the Bible, until a church was built. Traveling Ministers, who were priests that traveled around preaching to towns without churches, sometimes visited.

There were many traditions, and one well known was the house and barn raising. How this worked, was that the new settlers' neighbors came and helped build houses and barns in exchange for the party with dancing and food that followed.

Pioneers had more fun things to do than most people think! They sometimes had parties for barn and house-raising, corn husking, quilting bees and nut gathering. They also had horse and running races, and wrestling matches.
