Project Titles by Category: Quality of Materials, Structures High Energy Back To How To Do A Science Project, The Selah Way! |
Ways to find a science fair project idea
1. Look at lists
of science categories and pick one that you are interested in, then narrow
it
down to a specific project. For example, say you pick microbiology,
then narrow it to
fermentation,then
to a topic like “What is the effect of temperature on the rate offermentation
of apple juice.”
2. Use your experiences.
Remember a time you noticed something and thought “I wonder how that
works?” or “I wonder what would happen if...” then turn that into a project.
Check the science section of the school library. Browse and look
at book titles, then look inside
the ones that look interesting to you. Also thumb through encyclopedias
and magazines. Some
good magazines for ideas are: National Geographic, Discover,
Omni,
Popular
Science,
Popular
Mechanics, Mother Earth News, High Technology,
Prevention
and Garbage.
3. Think about
current events. Look at the newspaper. People are hungry
in Africa
because of droughts - a project on growing plants without much rain, which
types grow okay
with little water? Or the ozone hole over Antarctica - how can we
reduce ozone damage?
Or oil spills, how can we clean them up? - a project idea on how to clean
oil out of water.
4. Watch commercials
on TV. Test their claims. Does that anti-perspirant really
stop wetness
better than other ones? Does one stain cleaner remove a stain better
than another stain cleaner?
5. Use the
Internet. Go to the Selah School District Home Page and click
on the
“Students in 6-12” button. This will lead you to the References and
Science sections in just two
clicks of the mouse. You might want to try “Search the net”, also
found on the Home Page. This
will lead you to several search engines such as Yahoo and Meta Crawler,
where you can search for
subjects by key words and phrases.

BEHAVIORAL: (human or animal responses to environment), These projects require a sample population of 10-30 individuals to be valid. Permission from medical doctors or veterinarians, teachers, and parents is required. If students are to be used as test subjects you must notify the building principal(s) and collect parent permission slips. You must complete and/or collect all of your paperwork and submit it to an Institutional Review Board before your experiment can begin.
BIOCHEMISTRY: (organic chemistry, a study of chemicals and materials found in living things) Projects in this area will require knowledge and use of glassware and chemical lab equipment. Direct adult supervision may be required.
BOTANY: (study
of plants and plant growth and behavior, mold and fungus projects are lumped
in this category also),
Plant growth projects must be done during the growing season outside or
require greenhouse conditions during the winter. You must plan ahead,
because plants need to grow for about 1-2 months to get measurable results.
You must grow many plants in test or control groups for the results to
be valid. A minimum of 10 plants in a test group should be used.
CHEMISTRY: (physical and chemical changes in matter) Projects in this area will require knowledge and use of glassware and chemical lab equipment. Direct adult supervision may be required. Some chemistry experiments may be required to take place in a lab.
COMPUTERS: Science projects in this category will require you to either invent/build hardware or write software. You will need access to computers and/or electronic hardware and tools.
EARTH SCIENCE: (geology, astronomy, weather) Since most science projects take place during the winter months, you should consider how cold weather will affect any field work an earth science project might require.
ENGINEERING:
(study and design of structures and building materials) Structures and
materials are tested. You may have to build structures in order to
test them. The quality of
your craftsmanship
can affect the experiment.
ENVIRONMENTAL:
(ecology, natural resources, etc.) These projects are interesting and
relevant. Materials
for environmental projects usually are easy to acquire. Some of these
projects
require field work
and some may need several months to complete.
HEALTH: (human
physiology, diet, disease) The same paperwork and permissions are required
as in behavioral projects
if human subjects are used in the experiment.
MATHEMATICS: These projects apply mathematical principles and formulae to natural phenomena. High level math skills are required.
MICROBIOLOGY:
(study of cells, viruses, and microorganisms such as bacteria and protists)
If any disease causing
microorganisms or pathogens are used in your experiment you must
work in a lab under adult supervision and have approval from the Scientific
Review Committee before
you begin your experiment.
PHYSICS: (simple machines, work, power, motion, heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, nuclear energy) Most projects in this area are easy to research and measure.
ZOOLOGY: (the
study of the growth and physiology of animals) If vertebrate animals are
used,
permission from a
veterinarian and paperwork must be completed and approved before experimentation
takes place. The size of you test groups is important. There should
be about 10-30 individuals (or more) in your test and control groups for
your results to be valid.
